Building AI Risk Awareness for a Safer Future

With the emergence of powerful general-purpose AI models, an unprecedented race has begun across industries and social media platforms to implement innovative AI features. While companies hope to gain a competitive advantage, the speed of implementation comes with many risks. To highlight those risks and start a conversation about a regulatory environment which enables responsible competition around AI, Toni Piëch Foundation is supporting the U.S.-based think tank Center for Humane Technology (CHT).

WHO IS THE CENTER FOR HUMANE TECHNOLOGY?

Since its founding in 2018, CHT has been at the forefront of urgent conversations — and key interventions — when it comes to technology and its impact on society. Throughout the organization’s wide-ranging and acclaimed work, CHT has leveraged an interdisciplinary approach, combining deep expertise in technology, policy, and media to address some of the most pressing challenges of our time. From massive media projects including award-winning Netflix documentary The Social Dilemma, to trail-blazing tech policy work at the state and federal level in the U.S., CHT remains uniquely positioned to drive discourse around how technology is impacting our lives and our democracies.

WHAT RISKS ARE WE TALKING ABOUT?

The rapid uptake of large language models (LLM) and generative AI like ChatGPT has created a new string of challenges, while also exacerbating existing problems. New AI models are very powerful but also ethically neutral, being a potential key technology for medicine and science, but also enabler for bad agents to create unprecedented disruptions to society. This ranges from deepfakes, fake news, and fraudulent activities, over new toolsets for authoritarian regimes, to existential threats like autonomous weapons and warfare.

Due to the pressing nature of these challenges, in 2025, the Toni Piëch Foundation provides a grant of $120,000 to CHT for a promising project concerning AI risks.
